So that I don’t have to maintain/upgrade Wordpress, I’m moving this over to Blogspot to manage it more easily.

Equifax: Slow, Transunion: Mixed Signals

May 7th, 2008

So, Transunion always gets back to me quickly. The problem is that the response I get don’t match the requests I sent.

Basically, I have a letter from a bank stating they cannot produce proof that the account on my credit record is mine. I’ve sent a copy of this letter to Transunion, and they claim that they’ve confirmed the account with the bank, and that the report is correct. I’ve talked to the bank separately, and they don’t have the legally required proof to do this.

I’m not sure what to do next. The options, as I understand them, are:

  1. Resend all the letters again now. I’m in the right on this one.
  2. Wait awhile, maybe 90 days, then resend everything again.
  3. Try legal recourse; contact the Attorney General of PA, where Transunion is located. Maybe try an attorney, although that would be much higher priced than I think this one smudge is worth.
  4. Wait until it clears off my record in another two or three years.

I’m leaning towards #1 or #2, and not sure whether to follow up with an “I don’t understand, as the bank can’t seem to send proof that that’s my account”, or wait three months to avoid being a nuisance, and follow up with a “the bank doesn’t have proof of that being my account, please show that you’ve gotten proof from them or remove this from my account”.

If another round or two of requests doesn’t pan out, I’ll investigate more into talking directly to the Attorney General’s office, and see if I can’t get it straightened out that way.

In other news, Equifax is by far the slowest of the three bureaus. They usually address the letters fairly quickly (as shown by a credit check through their website), but it takes five to eight weeks to get a response back from them in the mail.

News from Experian

April 17th, 2008

So, received a letter back from Experian that my letter from a bank stating they didn’t have proof of that being my account…  ”was not sufficient proof”.  Experian is conducting “their own investigation”, and will respond “in 30 to 45 days”.

Being they already “investigated” this the first time and said they checked with the bank, I’m moderately salty they’re going to take over a month to make a check that took me four days roundtrip.  I’ll post back how this one goes.
